There are a number of documents that you must have with you when driving in Europe. Many of these are pretty much part of the UK standard for documentation but there are a couple of extra ones to think about when driving in Europe.
Many of the motoring organisations have great advice when it comes to driving abroad. However, I sometimes find it difficult to locate exactly the information you need, because there is just so much on there!
The AAs guidance for driving abroad is really good, but be sure you click through the links to fully understand the requirements.
UK Standard Documents
As you would expect, if you are stopped in Europe the relevant authorities will want to see a number of documents. These are pretty much standard across most European countries, so I’d have them to hand to avoid any issues.
European Breakdown Cover
In addition to needing to provide ‘standard’ documentation, you may also be required to prove that you have EU breakdown cover.
Of course, having EU cover is really sensible, but it can prove quite costly. I found that getting mine added to my existing car insurance was far cheaper than buying an additional policy.
Although EU breakdown cover wasn’t specifically called out by my insurers, it was really easy to get it added once I gave them a call.
